I love the new year — it’s definitely my favorite holiday. A chance to process the past twelve months and contemplate my deepest dreams for the next twelve? I mean, the best. The turning of cycles has been celebrated by every culture for millennia, and regardless of when your new year takes place, the month of December remains a beautiful opportunity to acknowledge what has been and will be.
Of course, go have a wild NYE — and also, take some time to honor the earth and yourself.
A little bit about the stars
On an energetic level, this month is a particularly potent time of change, and we are experiencing these deep shifts globally and individually. Astrologically speaking, the Sagittarius new moon on Saturday marked the conclusion of an 18-month cycle that began in May of 2020. Don’t forget that it is also still eclipse season, which essentially accelerates and amplifies everything you’re doing and feeling. You don’t have to believe in astrology to feel into the truth of nature.
Sagittarius is the centaur with the bow and arrow — the eternal seeker, the adventurer, the philosopher. We’re being invited (by the universal energy of the stars, of course) to channel the themes of Sagittarius (hopefulness, optimism, contemplation) as we prepare to fire our arrows. Collectively, we are here right now — deciding where to aim and preparing to launch into this new chapter.
It’s ok if you don’t know what you want in this new chapter. It’s not time.
The questions to ask yourself are not yet ‘where are you launching? or ‘what do you want to create?
Rather, the questions of the moment are, ‘what do you need to leave behind first?’ and ‘What is holding you back?’
Letting go - an invitation
We are designed to move toward growth and wholeness, toward expansion. It’s hardwired in us. This knowledge is part of Carl Jung’s life work —“that there is an inborn drive in the unconscious toward wholeness, completeness, and realization of the self” (from my favorite book Letting Go by David Hawkins). In order to consciously move forward instead of bumbling through life asleep, we gotta reflect on what has happened and what is not working anymore.
You don’t have to know what you want to manifest for the new year yet. But! Right now, life (and your unconscious) is begging you to consider what you’re willing to put down to enter this new cycle lighter and freer than ever before. The energy is primed to support you in shedding what you’re ready to shed.
Time to look at those dumpster fire moments of the last year and stare them in the face as you prepare to release your arrows and embody your brightest and most true self.
What are you done with? What are you actually done with?
Are you holding on to that ugly water bottle? That commitment you keep saying yes to even though you actually don’t enjoy it at all? Are your socks full of holes? Do you find yourself continuing to end up in relationships that feel chaotic and messy? Are you spending your days listening to your inner critic?
What are you ready to truly set down.
Feel into it. Accept it. Let it go.
Ultimately, once you acknowledge what has been keeping you stuck, it is free to eventually dissipate. With awareness comes release. Herein lies the power of reflection.
Where are you clinging? What are you gripping so tightly that your vision is blurred?
Where might you need to abandon hope? Give up and move on?
What is limiting you? What can you invite yourself to let go of?
Where have you been lying to yourself?
What has been left unfelt?
May you be free of what is limiting your expansion.
