I went to see Kacey Musgraves in concert the other night, it was fun thanks for asking. Kacey’s wisdom is very matter of fact. Her lyrics are deceptively simple and clear, and the ease with which she sings makes you almost miss the depth of what she is saying. Kacey has a great line from an early album: ‘it is what it is, til it ain’t, anymore.’
Case in point; could you get any more simple and profound than that?
There’s nuance to all situations and people — we are multifaceted beings living in a richly complex world. And! There’s a simplicity to life that we must not forget. A simplicity that lies in the mundane, in this line — it is what it is, until it isn’t anymore.
Eventually, it will happen — or, it won’t. It works out, or it doesn’t. Or, maybe it works for a little bit, and then it doesn’t anymore, and that’s ok too.
I think part of the beauty of life is that it is transitory. Impermanent, always shifting. Cyclical, seasonal. Expanding, contracting. And that is sad and heartbreaking, and also wonderful and sweet and tender.
As Ram Dass said, “how much can we allow [ourselves] to become new, and how much do we cling to what used to be yesterday?”
It’s like this now. It isn’t like it was three months ago. It’s not even like it was last night. It’s not how it will be in six weeks, or how it will be tomorrow. Stop clinging to what was and what you hope will be. Be with what is here. Tend to what is here.
I think the essence of truth is almost always simple. Regardless of if it’s difficult to face, regardless of the extraneous mental clutter. There is an uncomplicated undercurrent to what is true and it begins with an acceptance of what is here now.
And so we surrender. Again and again and again.
I think that by allowing ourselves to embrace the impermanence of all things, we create room for continuous rebirth and renewal. The more we stop resisting the truth of right now, the easier it is to be free.
