Love yourself
(Cue the chorus of minds that say ‘but this/but that/but the other thing!’)
It’s true, there are always reasons that can keep us from loving ourselves. Many self-destructive tendencies live in our subconscious and operate automatically until we bring awareness to them. So yeah, whatever story is blocking you from loving yourself makes sense. And also, no matter how hard it is to move beyond this story, with time and practice, you can indeed move beyond it. Every moment you show yourself love strengthens your belief in your worthiness. It takes work, but bit by bit, it becomes easier and easier to love more of yourself more of the time.
We come from it.
If you can love another being, you can love yourself, because we are all part of the same whole. Love is our most natural state. We come from it.
This idea, that we are all part of the same whole, that we come from love, that we are love, is from all the great mystics and philosophers. It’s not new, and yet I think it’s so unfamiliar to so many people. Every time I feel the presence of pure love within me, it rocks me. Why is it so easy to forget how to love ourselves? Why are we so inclined toward self-deprecation and sabotage?
At some point, it gets old (or dangerous) to keep listening to the mind’s outdated bullshit that keeps you small. And then, you will have to decide that you are going to love yourself more than you already do — or want to remember that you already know how. On some deep level, regardless of how smothered it is by cultural conditioning and survival brain language, you do know that you are love and that you can reconnect to this energy at any point.
Love will not leave you because it cannot.
Bethany Toews said this, that hell is just a place where we forget that love never leaves us.
I mean. Have you heard a more beautiful line than that.
Love will never leave you, because it cannot. It is everlasting within you. And even if you stray far from it, even if you are lost or hurting yourself (or someone else) for a long time, you can always (always) come back to love. It will never greet you with guilt or shame or regret — always and only absolute acceptance. It will always be ready for you to say, ok, I’m ready, I’m ready to change or get help or make the move or confront the truth or whatever it is that you’ve strayed from. You can trust that the part of you that is connected to infinite love / the universe will always and forever be waiting for you to come home to it, ready to provide guidance.
You don’t have to wait to hit rock bottom to decide to love yourself. You deserve it now, so just practice loving more of yourself, at more points of the day, a little more, every day. You practice showing up for yourself, taking care of your body, feeling around for a nicer thought, more and more and more so that eventually you get to a state at which it is so easy, so familiar, to reconnect with the voice of love inside you.
Because it’s always there.
xx, maggie
